Preparing for permanent makeup – a practical checklist
Author: Tsvety Bita, permanent makeup specialist

Good preparation reduces unnecessary irritation and helps make the consultation more accurate. You do not need to change your routine radically, but the area should be calm and the specialist should know about every factor that may affect the treatment.
One to several weeks before the treatment
Plan your appointment so that there is no important event right after it. Healing involves a stronger initial colour, possible swelling and flaking.
Check the intervals after fillers, botulinum toxin, lasers, peels and surgery with the relevant medical professional. Do not rely on universal time frames for every treatment.
- Do not plan it just before a wedding, a trip or a photo shoot.
- Tell us about recent aesthetic treatments.
- Leave time for a possible touch-up.
The skin in the area should be calm
Postpone if you have an active rash, infection, cold sore, stye, severe cracking or sunburn. Do not do aggressive cleansing, waxing, strong peels or start a new active skincare product right before your appointment.
For brows, leave your natural hairs visible so the shape can follow your real growth. For lips, keep up your usual gentle hydration without harsh exfoliation.
- No active infection or wound.
- No aggressive drying.
- Do not pluck a large part of your brows yourself.
Medication, allergies and medical information
Prepare a list of the medicines and supplements you take, as well as information about allergies and previous reactions. Never stop a prescribed medicine without your doctor's advice.
A history of cold sores before a lip treatment, an eye condition before eyeliner, or surgery before medical micropigmentation requires an additional medical assessment.
- A list of medicines and supplements.
- Information about allergies.
- Previous reactions to cosmetic treatments.
- Photos or details of old permanent makeup.
On the day of the treatment
Eat normally and arrive on time, so the design is not rushed. Avoid excessive alcohol and any other factors the specialist has given you specific instructions about.
Do not wear heavy makeup on the area. Bring photos of styles you like, but be prepared for them to be adapted to your anatomy.
- Bring glasses if you need to remove contact lenses for eyeliner.
- Bring your favourite lipstick shade for a lip treatment.
- Allow enough time for the consultation and design.
- Ask all your questions before we begin.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to stop drinking coffee?
Follow the specialist's specific instructions and do not make drastic changes without a reason. It is more important not to arrive hungry, dehydrated or very anxious.
Can I wear makeup?
It is better for the area to be clean or with minimal makeup, but you can show a photo of how you usually do your makeup.
Should I pluck my brows beforehand?
No. Your natural growth is important for the right design.
The most accurate recommendation is made after an individual consultation and an assessment of your skin, natural hairs, shape and desired result.
