Contraindications for permanent makeup – when the treatment is postponed
Author: Tsvety Bita, permanent makeup specialist

Permanent makeup is an elective treatment and can be postponed when the skin or your general condition does not allow safe recovery. An honest questionnaire and consultation are part of professional work, not a formality.
Active problems in the area
We do not work over an infection, an open wound, severe inflammation, active dermatitis, a cold sore, a stye or an unexplained rash. Pigmenting damaged skin can make the condition worse and lead to unpredictable healing.
The treatment is also postponed after fresh sunburn, severe irritation after a peel, or immediately after an aggressive cosmetic treatment.
- Infection or a purulent process.
- Open wounds and unhealed scars.
- An active cold sore for lips.
- Conjunctivitis or a stye for eyeliner.
- Severe dermatitis or an allergic reaction.
Medication and medical conditions
Some medicines and conditions can affect bleeding, the immune response and recovery. Do not stop prescribed medicines because of a treatment. Instead, discuss the situation with your doctor.
Diabetes, blood clotting disorders, autoimmune conditions, active cancer treatment and a tendency to certain types of scarring require an individual medical assessment. A diagnosis does not always mean an absolute ban, but the decision is not made by the beauty specialist alone.
- Anticoagulants and medicines that affect bleeding.
- Immunosuppressive therapy.
- An uncontrolled chronic condition.
- Recent surgery or active medical treatment.
Pregnancy, breastfeeding and hormonal changes
Many studios do not perform permanent makeup during pregnancy because of altered sensitivity, unpredictable pigment retention and the principle of not undergoing an unnecessary elective treatment. Policies on breastfeeding vary, and an informed assessment is needed.
Hormonal changes, active treatments and periods of severe stress can affect the skin and recovery. Sometimes postponing is the wisest choice.
- Tell us if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
- Do not keep hormone therapy to yourself.
- Do not plan the treatment right before an important event.
Recent aesthetic and medical treatments
Botulinum toxin, fillers, lasers, peels and surgery can temporarily change the tissue or the position of the area. An appropriate interval must be observed, and if in doubt, ask the medical professional who performed the treatment.
After eye surgery, reconstruction or work on a scar, wait for full recovery. The specific time frame should not be based on a universal piece of internet advice.
- A recent filler or botulinum toxin near the area.
- Laser, a deep peel or aggressive treatment.
- Eye surgery before eyeliner.
- Surgery or radiotherapy before medical micropigmentation.
Important: This list is not exhaustive and does not replace a medical consultation. Share all diagnoses, medicines and recent treatments.
